Uganda was declared as an Ebola free

On daybreak of Tuesday, July 28, 2026, Uganda was declared as an Ebola free country by Minister of Health Dr. Chris Baryomunsi as the statement was backed up by a mandatory 42- day’s intensive and strict monitorization which take in place when the last confirmed patient was discharged and released on June 16, 2026. In total, there were twenty confirmed infected cases; eighteen of them successfully recovered from the virus, but unfortunately, two died. Both fatalities happened to individuals who had originally acquired them from the Democratic Republic of the Congo before crossing over to the Ugandan side.

The virus was identify and named Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain, because the area it was first registered was in Bundibugyo district of which the unusual Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain had no licensed vaccines or direct therapies for treating, Making the situation unpleasing and grave on the borders between Uganda and  the DRC, the originating country in mid May 2026. Many health organizations had registered thousands of infected patients with over 1,400 fatalities, marking it as the fastest-spreading Ebola strain, breaking the record.

In order to limit the rate at which the virus was fast at spreading cross-borders, Uganda and Democratic Republic of the Congo signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as joint cooperative effort, which allowed Uganda setup two mobile virus testing laboratories having a shelter of 80-bed Ebola Treatment Unit in Aru and kasenyi, DRC

In conclusion, therefore, although Uganda is currently declared Ebola-free, the Ministry of Health has put in place strict measures and a standby medical team with heightened surveillance, warning that the risk of re-importation is still significant on the cross-border mobility.
