In a polygynous mating system, powerful males compete in “necking” competitions to get access to receptive females. Male Nubian giraffes can mate with multiple females within their area. Female Nubian giraffes typically reach sexual maturity between the ages of 3 and 4 years, whereas males mature physically around the same time but do not procreate effectively until they are 6-7 years old due to social rivalry.
